On the 24th August 2023 RS were honoured to be able host a naming ceremony for our Venture sail number 233. The boat was named ‘Jane Carol’ in honour of Suzie Tydeman and her family’s commitment to Rutland Sailability.
Suzie’s sister-in-law, Jane and her son Matt have been enthusiastic members and supporters of Rutland Sailability for many years. When Jane died in 2009 Suzie promised she would walk along the ‘Via Francigena’ pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome to raise money for Rutland Sailability.
Over several years, interrupted by COVID, Suzie carried out the 2,000 kilometre pilgrimage to Rome which she completed this year. The pilgrimage ‘was challenging’ with many of the 2,000 kilometres completed alone including crossing the Alps alone. Suzie advertised her journey to friends, family and total strangers encouraging them all to donate to her fundraising campaign for Rutland Sailability. This has now resulted in a significant donation to RS which will be used to support our newly named Venture 'Jane Carol' in memory of her sister-in-law Jane.
Matt, Jane's son, experienced a life-changing event when he was a teenager and continues to sail with RS and greatly appreciated the opportunity to name the Venture in memory of his mother.
A wonderful and memorable day was had by all which culminated in Suzie and some of her family sailing in 'Jane Carol'.

49 sailors in 36 boats, competed in seven races, in the four Hansa Fleets, bringing together teams from12 Sailability groups or clubs located in England, Scotland & Ireland – despite some very challenging sailing conditions over the three day event !
This was made possible by the excellent race management provided by Rutland Sailing Club and the support each day from 25 experienced Rutland Sailability volunteers. A huge thank-you to them all.
And to the sailors, with a wide range & degree of disability and racing experience – congratulations. Some were sailing in their first competition, others were preparing to represent the UK in the Hansa Worlds later this year.
The overall success of the event was due to the co-operation & flexibility in response to the changing launching & racing conditions. To the sailors and their shore support teams, Rutland Sailing Club and Rutland Sailability - thank-you.
In addition to all the 'sailing-stuff' on Sunday RS served tea, coffee and home baked cakes to those who had taken part.
Many people volunteered to bake, including friends, carers and other non-members. The end result was a gorgeous buffet of all types of wonderful looking baked goods.
Thanks go to Vee, Jane, Jill, Di Faulks, Gigi, Marie, Pat’s husband, Jayne, Wendy, Wendy, the Powells, Caz, Gemma and the Charnia management and staff. Hopefully no one has been missed out.
All of the effort and hard work paid off, many of the visitors came back to thank us profusely

On 15th June RS hosted a number of students from Uppingham Community College to give them the opportunity to experience the freedom and fun of sailing!
The project was initiated by Aedán, a student at UCC and one of our regular Saturday Youth Sailors, who wanted to show his fellow students what a great sport sailing is.
Thanks go to the RS members who managed the visit, set up the boats and then paraded and posed past the photo boat where we were able to take some wonderful pictures. Smiling faces make volunteering at RS so worthwhile!
Rutland Sailability is delighted to announce the launch of their new Challenger trimaran, ‘Thunderball’. The name is a reminder that the purchase was made possible by a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund. Thunderball will enable even more sailors with a disability to enjoy the thrill of a different sailing experience.
Sailing is a fabulous outdoor sport for people of all ages with a disability. This might range from learning to sail, the satisfaction of sailing solo, sailing with friends, racing against others or, simply enjoying the sensation of being out on the water in a beautiful setting such as Rutland Water.
Thanks to the support of the National Lottery and valued local donors, Rutland Sailability has a range of boats & equipment to meet the differing needs, skills & aspirations of members with a disability. In the hands of a friendly team of experienced sailors & volunteers, this equipment enables.
